The University of Georgia Franklin College of Arts and Sciences will host a lecture by Florent Bernard, the Counsellor for Research and Innovation at the European Union Delegation to the United States in Washington, DC, on Friday, October 3 at 11 a.m. in the Larry Walker Room of Dean Rusk Hall. This lecture is free and open to the public.

Bernard’s lecture, “E.U.-U.S. Collaboration Opportunities in Research and Innovation with Horizon Europe,” will focus on nurturing global partnerships in scientific research and technological advancement. His lecture will highlight the strategic opportunities for collaboration between European and American institutions through Horizon Europe, the E.U.’s flagship research and innovation program.

As Counsellor, Bernard plays a pivotal role in strengthening transatlantic synergies, promoting joint initiatives, and facilitating dialogue between European and U.S. research communities. His work supports the development of shared scientific goals and innovation strategies across borders.

Bernard himself spent a year studying biochemistry and molecular biology at UGA. He has also studied at the University of Barcelona in Spain and the University of Florence in Italy and later earned a Ph.D. in molecular biology from the Université Libre de Bruxelles. Prior to his current position, he was an International Relations Officer for the European Commission working on E.U.-China and E.U.-India R&I cooperation.

“We are honored to welcome Dr. Bernard back to the University of Georgia,” said Anna Stenport, dean of the Franklin College. “With a rich history in global research collaboration, Bernard offers a unique opportunity for our students to learn about the necessity of innovation and research on an international scale.”

Bernard’s lecture supports Franklin’s ongoing Academic Innovation Initiative, a multifaceted approach to fostering innovation and entrepreneurship within the arts and sciences that will empower students and faculty across multiple disciplines to embrace creativity, collaboration, entrepreneurship, research, and leadership as integral parts of their academic journey.

A light reception will follow.
